What to know before your trip
Finland uses the euro, and credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere, even in rural areas. Tap payments work at most shops and restaurants. ATMs are available in every town, though carrying some cash is still useful for small market stalls.
English is widely spoken in cities and tourist areas. In Lapland and smaller towns, basic Finnish phrases go a long way. Finns appreciate visitors who try a few words, even a simple "kiitos" (thank you) will earn a smile.
Public transport between cities runs on schedule. VR trains connect Helsinki to Tampere in 1.5 hours and to Rovaniemi in about 8 hours by overnight sleeper. Buses reach areas where trains do not. During summer, domestic flights drop in price and offer fast connections to Lapland airports like Ivalo and Kittila.
The right of public access (jokamiehen oikeus) allows anyone to walk, ski and pick berries freely in Finnish nature, even on private land. This makes hiking and outdoor activities unusually accessible compared to most European countries.

When is the cheapest time to visit Finland?
Late September through November and January through February (outside school holidays) are the least expensive periods. Flights and accommodation drop significantly compared to summer peak and the Christmas season in Lapland.
Do you need a visa to visit Finland?
EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa. US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa under the Schengen agreement. Bring a valid passport with at least 3 months remaining validity.
Is Finland expensive for tourists?
Finland is moderately expensive by European standards. Restaurant meals cost 12 to 25 euros. Budget travelers can save by renting cabins with kitchens, shopping at S-Market or K-Market supermarkets, and using public transport instead of taxis.
What is the best region in Finland for a first visit?
The Helsinki region works well for first-timers. Combine 2 to 3 days in Helsinki with a trip to Porvoo or Turku. If you have more time, take the train north to the Lake District or fly to Rovaniemi for a taste of Lapland.
